The social media climate is changing

I do like that people seem way more aware of what kind of imagery they are sending out to the general public. Some believe posting picture perfect shots [horse wise] doesn't portrait reality, and is a kind of self chosen censorship.

Is it only me? Or do you also see and feel that the social media climate has started to change? The other week me and a friend sat talking about horses, equestrian sport, horse photography, and last but not least - social media.

Me who got my Facebook account hacked, I guess two years back in time or so, have since then not had much of an appearance outside my own little bubble.

Last year when I did a total makeover of my podcasts and website which ended up in what is now known as Stallet I really couldn't be bothered to even get going on Instagram to market this project.

Even so, the first merge of my projects did happen on a social media platform.

Which would be the [according to me] once upon a time very much appealing "new" social media platform that spells Substack. My own presence on Substack goes back years in time!

The thing that sold me in was not only the nifty features on offer but also the idea of owning my own content. Back then it was all about the newsletters.

Then things changed, suddenly one could just follow people, they implemented a new feature named Notes, they started [maybe they always did] to buy people from other platforms.

Notes was a counterstrike on X, and team Meta did not wait long to release their very own counterstrike named Threads.

Notes have been become a massive hit on Substack, in many cases it has taken over the long format postings and articles. But not only that, in notes you really don't own your content. Cause unlike the long format articles you cannot download the notes and move them into another platform.

The last couple of months, and after US President Trump was reinstated, a lot of people abandoned both the Meta products as well as X. A lot of these people have done so in favour of Substack and Bluesky.

Stallet is known at both platforms, but plan to work the Bluesky more than the Substack. The reason for this is Bluesky never gave us any empty promises like Substack did.

But never mind my own social media behaviour. As my friend pointed out the social media behaviour within the Olympic disciplines have also changed.

Time travelling?

Today people seem to be more careful what they put out there. For both good and bad. I do like that people seem way more aware of what kind of imagery they are sending out to the general public.

Some believe posting picture perfect shots [horse wise] doesn't portrait reality, and is a kind of self chosen censorship.

I don't agree.

Cause as long as we are educating ourselves while being equally open about the problems we do have within our own bubble of horses and equestrian sports [no matter the discipline], then we will also practise some kind of self cleansing.

For the dormant photo professional and picture editor within, I cannot say I cry that much over the fact that a lot of rider's now seem to have ditched the not so serious "facebook photographers" in favour of some mega talented amateur and photo professionals.

The term facebook photographer refers to the kind of photographer that without any self criticism nor aim to earn money just dump all their photos on Facebook and give away for free.

To me it feels like we travelled about 10-15 years back in time. Back to the days where quality beat quantity any day of the week. Could this be another turning point?
