Italian rider Piergiorgio Bucci has won today the Longines FEI World Cup Grand Prix Ciudad de Madrid, held at IFEMA Madrid Horse Week. Bucci, riding Hantano, clocked an unbeatable time of 40.77 seconds in the tie-break to win the most awaited event of the weekend.
In second place, Irish rider Michael Pender, riding HHS Los Angeles, finished in 41.42 seconds. Dutch rider Maikel van der Vleuten on Beauville Z completed the podium in third place with a time of 41.48 seconds.
A total of 13 riders went through to the jump off, but only 5 managed to complete the course without faults. The first rider to do so was Germany's Marcus Ehning, who with Coolio 42 looked set to take the win, but his time was quickly overtaken by subsequent competitors.
The last rider to go, Michael Pender, had a fast ride, but failed to beat Bucci's time. Thus, the Italian took the first place, leaving the other competitors behind.
Mariano Martínez Bastida, the best Spanish rider of the race, was the only Spanish representative who managed to go through to the Jump Off with Belano vd Wijnhoeve. However, a knockdown on the course left him in eighth position with 4 points.
The trophy was presented to the winner by Almudena Maillo, Councillor Delegate for Tourism of Madrid City Council, and the Longines watch by Elena Orozco, Brand Manager of Longines Spain.
This exciting Grand Prix was the finishing touch to an adrenaline-filled day at IFEMA Madrid Horse Week, where the best riders in the world fought for victory.
